Can Diet & Exercise Improve Arthritis Symptoms?

Hey guys! So, it’s April and you know what that means? Yup, you guessed it, Arthritis awareness month!!! Ok, so maybe it isn’t the month glamorous awareness month but still important none the less. So let’s talk about arthritis, the different types of and how to treat or prevent this occurrence in your life.

food-healthy-man-person (1)First and foremost, there are 2 main types of arthritis, one being Rheumatoid arthritis and the other being osteoarthritis. The main difference between osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis is the cause behind the joint symptoms. Osteoarthritis is caused by mechanical wear and tear on joints. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease in which the bodies own immune system attacks the body’s joints. While both can are important and worth a discussion, today we are going to talk about osteoarthritis in detail and give you 3 immediate implantable actions to curb and address it now!

Osteoarthritis is the most common chronic condition of the joints, affecting approximately 27 million Americans. OA can affect any joint, but it occurs most often in knees, hips, lower back and neck, small joints of the fingers and the bases of the thumb and big toe. Essentially, overuse, lack of efficiency or instability can cause wear and tear of cartilage over time. As the cartilage starts to wear, you can start to effect the underlying bone and in turn create inflammation which will cause bone degeneration, swelling, edema, bone spurs and well a whole myriad of other symptoms. So, let’s discuss what causes this and how to prevent it.

Cause #1 Obesity is the leading cause of OA. Our bodies are amazingly resilient and self healing. Obesity places extreme pressure and load on otherwise normal joints which will cause wear and tear. Even the healthiest joint cant handle excessive loads over time. We can call this “excessive load on a normal joint”

Cause #2 Unstable joints! We can call this “normal loads on an unstable joint” Postural distortions, sedentary lifestyle, whiplash, improper ergonomics can take an otherwise normal load on the body and create the same inflammatory environment due to the body’s inability to handle normal loads.

Cause #3 An inflammatory diet/lifestyle. Living and eating in inflammatory was can also lead to degenerative changes over time. Inflammation can be systemic, picture your joints as little gasoline cans sitting in a field. Now picture inflammatory foods and a powerful flame, applying a flame to an otherwise dormant gas can will result in an explosion at some point for sure, no denying it!

Ok now lets fix this!!!!!!

Fix #1 It doesn’t get any easier. Get to a healthy weight so you can thrive and give your joints a break. It all starts with diet firstly. However, once you have that under control, we suggest HIIT training or interval training. Said type of training keeps your heart rate up and keeps your body burning calories with moderate impact. We love coached interval training, find a local reputable badass an get started.

Fix #2 Instability and inefficiency in the body can lead to wear and tear over time. Please seek care of a qualified professional to address your functionality. Chiropractors and DO’s should be able to asses and correct pelvic, lumbar or postural misalignments which can ease stress on joints so you can be the best version of yourself.

Fix #3 Cut sugar from your diet and or things which breakdown as sugar in your body. That means cut simple sugars, breads, pastas, and obvious sugary treats to decrease inflammation in the body. This also includes egregious sugar substitutes such as sucralose and aspartame as they are inflammatory as well. Add anti-inflammatory foods such as turmeric and ginger or any veggies which are bright and less starchy.

Do these things and you can begin to crush life and avoid any arthritic changes which make you less you J
